Research Fellow

María Atiénzar Prieto is a Research Fellow with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (CEVAW) at Griffith University.

María holds a PhD from Griffith University and a Master of Science in Forensic Psychology from Maastricht University. Her research focuses on intimate partner violence, examining its nature and impacts on adult and child victim-survivors, as well as public perceptions of abuse to inform effective prevention strategies. She has a particular interest in technology‑facilitated coercive control (TFCC) among young people, exploring how they perceive, understand, and experience this form of abuse.

Her work has identified key areas for educational prevention initiatives to reduce TFCC, along with evidence‑based recommendations for digital platform regulation and external governance to promote safer online environments. In addition, María has evaluated men’s behaviour change programs and investigated how service system contact and institutional responses to domestic and family violence can be strengthened to better meet the needs of victim-survivors.
