Capacity Building Workshop: “How Safe are Women? Cross-disciplinary issues, methods and data” as part of the Australian Gender Economics Workshop 2026

This interactive afternoon workshop will bring together researchers in the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence against Women (CEVAW) from a range of disciplines, including economics, public health, political science, criminology, law, social welfare, and data science, to examine pressing issues and innovative approaches in violence against women (VAW) research. The session is designed in two parts. The first segment will highlight emerging and critical issues, such as the effectiveness and gaps in legal responses to VAW, technology-facilitated violence, the visibility and documentation of femicides among Indigenous women, as well as broader social and familial impacts of VAW. Leading experts from different disciplines will present their research, providing participants with an in-depth understanding of both the social and policy challenges in addressing VAW. Following a short break, the second segment will focus on novel methods and data, featuring cutting-edge survey designs, field experiments, and analytical tools developed by CEVAW, including the discussion of the newly launched Women’s Safety Index on the Evidence Platform created by CEVAW. By combining insights from topical issues with innovative methodological approaches, the workshop aims to equip participants—including academics, policymakers, and practitioners—with practical knowledge, foster cross-disciplinary dialogue, and inspire new ideas for research, policy, and practice in preventing and responding to violence against women. CEVAW invites participants to a networking and drinks event at the conclusion of the capacity-building workshop.
