CEVAW Workshop: Women, Peace and Security (WPS) in Southeast Asia: Challenges and Opportunities

This workshop offers a space for scholars to collectively re-examine the WPS agenda in ASEAN – its policy translation and lived realities. We propose draft 5-page papers be presented on any relevant WPS topic – either a thematic area such as conflict resolution and prevention, crisis and disaster-preparedness etc or a reflection on country or local experiences of WPS.

This workshop seeks to foster critical discussion on how local, regional and national actors – including states, civil society, religious organisations, and donors – influence gender-inclusive protection, participation, prevention and recovery; and how feminist scholarship can inform more grounded and transformative approaches to peace and security in Southeast Asia.

Workshop Objectives
1. Critically assess the first five years of the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on WPS, identifying progress, gaps, and emerging challenges alongside specific outcome indicators.
2. Analyse and compare the gendered dimensions of any contemporary and (non) traditional security challenges or threat in the region.
3. Examine the interplay among state institutions, civil-society actors, religious or community groups, and donors in shaping WPS principles and practices.
