Farkhondeh Akbari

Research Fellow

Dr. Farkhondeh Akbari is a Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (CEVAW) at Monash University.

She holds a Ph.D. in Diplomatic Studies and an Advanced Master’s in Diplomacy from the Australian National University, a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Melbourne, and a Bachelor’s in International Relations from La Trobe University. Her research interests include non-state armed actors’ diplomacy, peacemaking, feminist foreign policy, and the Women, Peace, and Security agenda in conflict zones. Her Ph.D. thesis examined the characteristics required for non-state armed actors to negotiate peace settlements, focusing on the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

Dr. Akbari has published numerous journal articles and book chapters. She co-founded a grassroots non-profit NGO that takes a bottom-up approach to development and peacebuilding in Afghanistan, focusing on women’s empowerment. She is also an activist, using her scholarly research to advocate for women’s rights, inclusive peace, and the rights of vulnerable ethnic groups in Afghanistan.
