Katie Buchhorn

Katie Buchhorn is the Data Scientist at the Monash University node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (CEVAW).

Katie completed her PhD at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), specialising in Bayesian statistics and machine learning. Her research focuses on intelligent data collection and anomaly detection, with applications in environmental monitoring. During her PhD research, Katie worked within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers, developing methods that are highly adaptable to solving practical challenges associated with large and complex data sets across diverse fields. Katie brings a diverse background, having initially studied theoretical mathematics before spending years in the financial sector as a quantitative risk analyst. She is also engaged in outreach and STEM education, having delivered a TEDx talk titled ‘How Mathematics Helps Humankind’, and authoring a children’s book, Wondrous Worlds: The Extraordinary Adventures of a Curious Mathematician, which aims to encourage curious minds to explore careers in mathematics and data science.
