Rebecca Monson is an ARC DECRA Fellow in the ANU Law School at the Australian National University.

Since joining the ANU, Rebecca has led major research and teaching programs focused on gender, law and development, particularly in the Pacific. Prior to joining the ANU she worked at RMIT’s Centre for Risk and Community Safety and the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre, at the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society at Leiden University, and in a major law firm providing advice to the emergency management sector. Rebecca regularly provides research-led policy advice to aid donors, UN agencies and Pacific Island governments, and her work has had demonstrable impact on programs regarding gender equality, legal pluralism and access to justice, and climate adaptation. Rebecca drafted the Solomon Islands climate relocation guidelines, which have been praised by Human Rights Watch as “the most rights-respecting in the world”, and won Australia’s premier legal research prize for her book “Gender, Property and Politics in the Pacific: Who Speaks for Land?”. Rebecca is an active member of the Global Working Group on Customary and Informal Justice and SDG16+ and sits on the executive bodies of the Commission on Legal Pluralism, the Australian Association of Pacific Studies, and the Fiery Canoe Foundation.
