Reza Haffari is a Professor in the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Monash University and a leading researcher in trustworthy and socially responsible AI. His research focuses on developing intelligent systems that can understand, reason about, and safely interact with diverse human communities, cultures, and social contexts.

Reza has led and contributed to major international research programs, including the DARPA Computational Cultural Understanding program, which investigates how computational systems can model social norms, beliefs, values, and cross-cultural perspectives. His work combines large language models, neuro-symbolic methods, causal reasoning, and multi-agent systems to develop technologies that are more transparent, accountable, and aligned with human values.

Reza was an ARC Future Fellow and has received research awards from Google, Amazon, eBay, and several DARPA-funded programs. He was named Australia’s leading researcher in Computational Linguistics in both 2024 and 2025. His research spans AI safety and alignment, multilingual and multicultural AI, dialogue systems, and neuro-symbolic reasoning, with a particular focus on ensuring that advanced technologies are inclusive, trustworthy, and beneficial for society.
