Marlene Longbottom is an Associate Professor and Australia Research Council DAATSIA Fellow at James Cook University’s Indigenous Education and Research Centre. A Yuin woman from the Shoalhaven community, her research examines the intersecting impacts of colonial systems, criminalisation, gendered violence, trauma and child protection in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. She is currently leading an ARC funded project titled Navigating the Carceral Interface, focused on Indigenous young people and the criminal legal system. She serves on the Queensland Family and Child Commission Child Death Review Board and the Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Legal Service board, and provides expert reviews for coronial inquests and policy reform processes. Her work is widely recognised for advancing Indigenous-led approaches to justice, child protection, and family violence prevention. Her book, Defiant Resistance (Aboriginal Studies Press/AIATSIS, 2026), examines violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and the enduring impacts of systemic injustice.
